I love philosophy because I love knowledge. I know that knowledge and intelligence are magnificent factors that allow people to escape the horrible condition known as poverty. Through knowledge and education we can truly transform the world. So, today, I want to share with you a few principles that I believe can assist you in your pursuit of a happier and more successful life.
Breakdowns Lead To Breakthroughs
If we live long enough upon this beautiful Earth, we will likely experience many breakdowns. Breakdowns are negative events that have the potential to completely demoralize us. Most people allow negative events in their lives to stop them from moving forward. However, what they don’t realize is that breakdowns lead to BREAKTHROUGHS.
You see, tough times are what mold our character. When we are tested in life we show what we are really made of. Most successful people were able to succeed only after going through the roughest times of their lives. Life is not fair, and sometimes good people have to suffer. However, do not let this suffering stop you from success. Use your experiences to achieve a massive BREAKTHROUGH in your life.
The Two Dimensions
There are two dimensions in life. In one dimension we have what is out of our control. We cannot control the economy of the country we live in. We cannot control the weather. Even if we mistakenly think we can, we really can’t control other people. So, to dwell on this dimension of existence is a complete waste of time.
If we are smart, we will dwell on the second dimension of existence. This dimension includes everything which is under our direct control. Even though we cannot control the economy, the weather, or other people, we always have the capability to control ourselves. This is what successful people understand. Because we can control ourselves, we always have the ability to take the necessary actions that will take us to where we want to go. Therefore, it is vital that you choose to always focus on what is under your control.
The Two Circles
I once attended this personal development seminar that talked about a very interesting concept. They talked about how life consisted of two circles. In one circle we have reality, or what exactly happens to us on a daily basis. In the other circle we have our interpretation of reality or what happens to us on a daily basis.
For example, maybe it’s your birthday and you were expecting a call from your best friend but she didn’t call. Perhaps the reality is that her phone service was cut off because she forgot to make a payment. This is reality. However, because of human nature, maybe you created the story that she didn’t call you because you are not that important to her. Can you see how these two circles affect our lives? The key is to discipline ourselves to live in the circle of reality and avoid the circle of illusions. This is the key to long-lasting happiness.
At the same seminar, they made me do an interesting exercise. I was told to hold a piece of paper in my hands. I was then told to try to let it go without actually letting it go. As you can imagine, this is a ridiculous sounding exercise, but there was a point to all of this. The instructor told me to try as hard as I could to let it go without actually letting it go. Yes, this was madness, but I’m going to reveal to you the deeper meaning of this exercise.
Finally, I was told to simply let the paper go. The paper then fell effortlessly to the ground. Do you want to know the deeper meaning of this? The deeper meaning is that it is easier to LET GO. Too many people hold on to grudges. They hold resentment towards other people and this contributes to them living bitter lives. Sure, maybe your parents or friends betrayed you at some point, but holding on to bitterness is not a productive way to live. Learn to let go and you will have peace of mind and true happiness.
